The project is currently out for bid. Construction is expected to start during summer 2023.
Why is this project being done?
This project updates and maintains the city's aging watermain and right of way infrastructure to increase its longevity. These improvements provide the these benefits:
- Protect public health and safety
- Improve flow of traffic and bicycles
- Encourage safe pedestrian crossings
- Improve drainage on roads
- Maintain and improve quality of water main services
This area was prioritized for water main and road surfacing improvements due to:
- insufficient watermain sizes
- lack of watermain loops in the area
- reduced quality of road pavements
- the need for improved traffic flow and drainage
This project will install new water mains on Swift Street from Broadway Street to the railroad crossing, on Pontiac Trail from Longshore Drive to Swift Street, and on Wright Street from Kellogg Street to the dead end. This project will also consolidate the water main on Moore Street from Plymouth Road to Pontiac Trail. On every road section where water main work is being done, the road will be resurfaced. New ADA sidewalk ramp upgrades will be made where necessary. New pedestrian crosswalks and/or curbed bump-outs will be considered, to improve safety for pedestrians.
Possible impacts to existing conditions, residents, businesses, and property owners
Water service will be interrupted for short durations during water main installation. Disruptions will be limited, and residents will be informed in advance.
General noise and dust from equipment, mostly during site excavation.
Scheduled street closures during the construction phase.
