May 11 & 16 Community Listening Sessions to Focus on Sustainable Heating Feedback
Archived News Release: April 25, 2023 - A central part of the city's A2ZERO goal is becoming carbon neutral by 2030 and that means implementing clean, renewable energy choices to heat homes and businesses. On March 20, Ann Arbor City Council approved a resolution directing Ann Arbor's city administrator to work with interested utilities to begin initiating a responsible and careful transition to clean, safe, and renewable energy for heat in Ann Arbor.
Fossil fuel/methane gas alone produces more than 25 percent of Ann Arbor's polluting emissions making efforts to clean this stream critical to meeting the city's goal of community-wide carbon neutrality by 2030. The City of Ann Arbor's fossil fuel gas franchise with DTE Gas is set to expire in 2027 and work exploring a new franchise is just beginning. To support this work, the city is hosting a series of public discussions and feedback sessions.
Feedback Opportunities:
Listening Sessions: Two virtual listening sessions are scheduled on May 11 (Register here) and May 16 (Register here ) , both at 6 p.m. to gather community feedback about what sustainable heating could look like in Ann Arbor to help inform city staff negotiating the city's heating franchise. You need only register to attend one session, but registration is required.
Request for Ideas: A new request for ideas has been released to gather ideas from industry, utilities, and businesses working on sustainable heating. Organizations interested in submitting ideas to this request should visit the city's website for details.

“We encourage residents to share their feedback on how we can heat our lives with clean, affordable, reliable, safe, and healthy energy," said Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor. “This is an important and necessary step to accomplish Ann Arbor's just and equitable transition to community wide carbon neutrality by 2030."
