October 31, 2018 - On Sunday, Nov. 18, community members and neighbors are invited to join Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP) to improve Barton Nature Area on Family Volunteer Day. From 1 to 4 p.m., participants will remove invasive shrubs and collect native seeds to help improve the biodiversity of this part of the riverside greenway. Volunteers will meet at the Barton Dam parking lot on Huron River Drive. Everyone must complete a release form; and all minors should be accompanied by a guardian. Tools, snacks and know-how provided.

Family Volunteer Day was created by Points of Light more than 25 years ago to showcase the benefits of family volunteering. The event is celebrated annually the weekend before Thanksgiving. This global day of service celebrates the power of families who volunteer together to support their communities and neighborhoods. Powered by generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, and sponsored by the Walt Disney Company, it's a great way to be inspired by the power of helping others, and to bring the family together to make your mark on the world.

NAP shares that families who volunteer together not only address community social problems, but also strengthen themselves. Volunteering together as a family provides quality time, fortifies family communication and provides opportunities for family members to be role models. Volunteering as a family is a great way to make memories together and helps teach children the importance of giving back.

City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring and stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. Both staff and volunteers perform these tasks.
