Ann Arbor Firefighters Rescue Senior Citizen During House Fire

Archived News Release: August 27, 2018 - On Friday, August 24, 2018 at 3:12 a.m., the Ann Arbor Fire Department was notified of a house fire in the 2000 block of Arlene.

Engine 1-3 arrived at 3:16 a.m. to find a working house fire with a report of a senior citizen still inside. The Ann Arbor Police Department had already assisted one occupant from the residence prior to the fire department's arrival. Firefighters searched the residence to find a non-ambulatory senior citizen in a bedroom. The senior citizen was carried out by firefighters. The firefighters then proceeded with extinguishment of the fire. The cause of fire is under investigation. Two of the occupants were suffering from smoke inhalation and were transported by Huron Valley Ambulance to the University of Michigan Hospital in stable condition.

There were three occupants in the home at the time of the fire. One of the occupants was woken by a smoke detector to find smoke throughout the residence. This occupant was able to self-evacuate and call 911.

“Our crews did outstanding work this morning, and one of our residents is alive today because of that work," said Fire Chief Mike Kennedy. “This incident also reinforces the importance of having working smoke detectors. Please check your smoke detectors to ensure they work."
