Competition Now Open to Design City of Ann Arbor Flag

Archived News Release: September 8, 2023 - ​The City of Ann Arbor is tapping the inspiration and skill of Ann Arbor residents to design a flag for the City, meant to encourage joy and civic pride in the community. The competition is open to city residents of all ages. Six finalists will each receive $200, while the overall winner will receive an additional $500. The Ann Arbor's flag competition is intended create a new design that will become a permanent fixture of the community, flying over Larcom City Hall and other City facilities.

A panel of judges, led by Mayor Christopher Taylor, will select the finalists. Finalist entries will be displayed online and at Larcom City Hall for community input, which will begin Friday, Nov. 10, 2023. The panel will consider this community input when selecting a winning design, which will be announced in January 2024.  

“A successful City flag expresses and enhances community identity and pride," noted Taylor. “It builds togetherness and beautifies our civic spaces, our homes and probably a laptop or two.  I'm excited to see the amazing ideas Ann Arbor residents have for this effort and am certain that the choice is going to be incredibly difficult."

Designs must be submitted by 5 p.m., Friday, Nov. 3, 2023.

To be eligible, designs must align with the following criteria:

  • Simple enough that it could be drawn from memory.

  • Have meaningful symbolism.

  • Be distinct and avoid duplicating other flags.

  • Have no lettering or seals.

  • Use only two or three basic colors.

To help the public and the judges, entrants are encouraged to provide a short explanation of symbolism used in the design.
