Volunteer with NAP in July!

Archived News Release: June 13, 2023 - City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP) works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic within the community. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring, and stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. These tasks are performed by both staff and volunteers. NAP is sharing events planned for July 2023.

To attend a workday, participants are encouraged to preregister using VolunteerHub at https://cityofannarbor.volunteerhub.com/lp/nap; registration links are also provided with each description.

Volunteers are asked to wear long pants, tall socks and closed-toe shoes to NAP workdays. Tools and know-how provided. All minors should be accompanied by a guardian. More information is available at https://nap.a2gov.org/WhatToWear (PDF).

Stewardship Workday

Saturday, July 15, 2023

9 a.m.–noon

Kuebler Langford Nature Area

This natural area has a variety of natural communities to see and support on this summer Saturday workday. Part of the park is old field and contains native dry prairie species. A deep ravine bisects the park, and moist woods cover its slopes. Help NAP protect the natural habitat at this park by removing exotic plants. Meet at the park entrance on Beechwood Drive, north of Sunset Road (map: https://nap.a2gov.org/KueblerBeechwood). Volunteers will use their hands to pull small-to-medium plants from the ground. Workday sites have unpaved trails and require going off trail. Preregister at https://nap.a2gov.org/Kuebler071523 so NAP can plan on enough staff and supplies for a safe and successful event. For your safety, wear long pants, tall socks and closed-toe shoes. All minors should be accompanied by a guardian. More information: https://nap.a2gov.org/WhatToWear (PDF).

Stewardship Workday

Ruthven Nature Area

The sandy soils here provide a unique ecosystem, inhabited by native grasses and prairie wildflowers. It's a great place to look for butterflies and birds! You can foster the native plants here by removing the invasive species intruding in this habitat. Meet at the park entrance off Huron Parkway (map: https://nap.a2gov.org/RuthvenCorner). If driving, park at the Gallup boat dock parking lot, then follow the park path and use the crosswalk to get to the Ruthven Huron Parkway entrance (look for the NAP truck). Volunteers will use their hands to pull small-to-medium plants from the ground. Workday sites have unpaved trails and require going off trail.

Preregister at https://nap.a2gov.org/Ruthven072223 so NAP can plan on enough staff and supplies for a safe and successful event. For your safety, wear long pants, tall socks, and closed-toe shoes.
