Huron Hills Golf Course to Host FootGolf National Championship Qualifier

Archived News Release: August 19, 2016 - The American FootGolf League (AFGL) U.S. National Championship will hold a Michigan Qualifier at Huron Hills Golf Course, 3465 E. Huron River Dr., Ann Arbor, Saturday, Aug. 27 at 2 p.m. The Regional Qualifier feeds into the Michigan Regional Championship later this year, one of 16 regional championships planned, all of which form the basis of the AFGL U.S. National Championship, which will be held in November at Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert, California.

"AFGL has worked for the last four years to create a network of nearly 500 courses in the United States that have FootGolf courses," said U.S. National Championship Director Julia Barajas, "and the National Championship is the next logical step in the growth of the sport and its integration into the competitive sports landscape."

FootGolf, which is played on a traditional golf course, involves the kicking of a soccer ball down the fairway of the course, with the intention, similar to golf, of reaching the hole in as few "strokes" (kicks) as possible. In FootGolf, the hole is increased to 21 inches in diameter in order to accommodate a regulation soccer ball.

"It is fun to see this sport grow so quickly, and the fact that Ann Arbor has really embraced this additional way to use our beautiful golf course," said City of Ann Arbor Director of Golf Doug Kelly. "Being chosen by the AFGL to host a qualifier is an honor for the A2Golf staff."

FootGolf is suitable for players of various ages and genders, so the tournaments feature four different player classifications for the U.S. National Championship: Juniors ages 12-17 | Men ages 18-45 | Seniors ages over 45 | and Women ages 18 and over.
