The City of Ann Arbor completed an aerial survey of the deer population on February 18, which resulted in 202 deer counted. The last survey conducted in March 2015, counted 168 deer. View the aerial deer survey map (pictured here) online at www.a2gov.org/deermanagement

Similar to last year, the aerial survey was conducted by a three-person crew of city staff who visually counted deer via helicopter. The survey was conducted throughout the city.

Flyover deer-count results are not absolute or intended to be a comprehensive census of the entire deer population, but rather give insight into the minimum deer population in certain areas of the city at one point in time. Deer count numbers are useful as data points that can track trends over time.

Archived News Release: February 22, 2016 - As of February 22, 51 deer have been removed by United States Department of Agriculture Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Wildlife Services (USDA-APHIS) marksmen as a result of cull activities in designated city parks and nature areas. To date, 1,050 pounds of venison has been donated to a local food bank.

With the weather turning warmer, it's important for citizens to abide by park closure rules. Fourteen City of Ann Arbor parks and nature areas remain closed for all purposes Monday through Friday evenings from 4 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning until March 1, 2016. All parks remain open on weekends. Designated parks do not close until Monday at 4 p.m.
