Recycled Craft Project and Tour Saturday, May 9 at the MRF

Archived News Release: April 24, 2015 - Have you ever thought of repurposing old caps, cans and scraps to create wind chimes? Well you can give it a try at the Materials Recovery Facility (4150 Platt Road) Open House Saturday, May 9, 2015, from 10 a.m.–noon.

"We want people of all ages to come and learn more about the discards they put to the curb," said MacKenzie Maxwell, environmental educator. "Not only do people get to take home the knowledge of what happens to their waste, but they get to explore ways to repurpose it. This month, we're excited to have a more open-ended craft that will allow folks to explore their creative, maker side."

The open house is free and open to the public. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required, and children under age 6 are not allowed on the floor tour, but other age-appropriate activities will be available for them. Groups of five or more should register in advance at [email protected].

Every month, the MRF Education Center opens its doors and encourages people to come see just where their recyclables go, and explore the other ways their waste is handled. A craft or activity that focuses on recycling or repurposing is included each month as well. The 2014-2015 open house schedule can be found online at www.ecocenter.org/education/mrf/openhouse.

For more information, see www.ecocenter.org/education/mrf. Weekday tours of the facility are also available for groups of 15 or more; contact [email protected] or 734.663.9474 for more information.
