Archived News Release: March 31, 2015 - Celebrate spring by participating in a free event Saturday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to noon at Ann Arbor's Materials Recovery Facility (MRF). Explore how nature's recyclers turn old things into soil, and create your own compostable newspaper seedling pots to take home.
"With the spring start of curbside compost collection in the city, and the arrival of the planting season, it's time to start thinking about dirt," says MacKenzie Maxwell, environmental educator at the MRF. Information on various ways to compost and ways to get compost will be provided to visitors. "It's easy to concentrate on the ways people recycle at the MRF, but the way nature recycles can be just as interesting and beneficial. Percentage wise, food waste makes up a large portion of the waste stream in Ann Arbor, and much of that could easily be turned into usable soil for our gardens or yards."
The open house is free and open to the public. Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required, and children under 6 are not allowed on the floor tour, but other age-appropriate activities will be available for them. Groups of five or more should register in advance at
[email protected].
Open houses are held monthly at the MRF, 4150 Platt Road; the 2014-2015 schedule can be found here:
