Tracking Installation of New Sidewalk

Why This Target?

Complete sidewalk networks are a key part of the City's transportation system, and filling gaps in the sidewalk system has long been identified as a priority in Transportation Plans.

In November of 2020, voters approved a six-year New Sidewalk Millage. Public Services is charged with planning for and implementing the use of these funds to fill gaps in the sidewalk system, with the goal of spending an average of 90% of millage revenues year over year in order to maximize public benefit while maintaining a minimum fund balance. New sidewalks may also be constructed using private funds as a requirement of the site plan process for new developments. See the New Sidewalks FAQ for more information on the sidewalk construction process. Also see the Sidewalk Gap Prioritization & Progress dashboard to see locations of recent new sidewalk construction, planned projects for the current year, and prioritization ratings for potential future projects.

The Data

Interpreting the Results

The City has averaged almost 1.5 miles of new sidewalk construction per year in the tracking period.

In the two completed fiscal years since the New Sidewalk Millage was adopted the City has averaged spending 86% of millage revenues.

The fine print

Not all new sidewalk construction projects have the same costs per linear foot. The City may strategically set aside millage revenues in order to construct a logistically complicated, but high priority project in a future year.
