It pays to join thousands of Ann Arborites committed to carbon neutrality. The City of Ann Arbor dedicates approximately $2 million, funded by the 2022 Community Climate Action Millage, to help you reduce your home energy bills and boost comfort, make yard care healthier and easier, and put put e-bikes within reach. Applying is easy, and approximately 50% of the rebates are reserved for income-qualified households.

Eligibility

To be eligible for the A2ZERO Home Energy Rebate (HER) program, the following criteria must be met:  

  • You must own or rent a residential property within the City of Ann Arbor. 
  • All equipment must be installed at the eligible property
  • Installed equipment must meet the requirements detailed below in the Qualified Products table
  • You must be 18+ years of age
  • The project is part of a retrofit or upgrade to an existing building.
  • The project is part of an addition to an existing structure, only if the improvements exceed Michigan Residential or Commercial Code requirements. 

Rebates are not available for the following projects:

  • Entirely new construction, including new homes or commercial buildings built from the ground up.
  • Measures that are code-required minimums in new construction, retrofits, or additions.

The A2ZERO Home Energy Rebate Program offers higher dollar amounts for income-eligible individuals to help offset the costs associated with energy efficiency and electrification projects. These enhanced rebates are designed to make clean energy technologies more accessible to all residents, particularly those with lower incomes. 

  1. Check if your household's annual gross income (includes all members of the household, regardless of relationship) is at or below 120% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for Ann Arbor. You can refer to the income eligibility chart provided below.

  2. If your income qualifies you for an income-qualified rebate, complete the Income Eligibility Self-Attestation Form or submit a PDF of the Income Eligibility Self-Attestation Form by email, mail, or fax. Ensure that you accurately fill out all sections of the form and accurately declare all sources of household income. 
  3. Submit the completed form. You will be notified of your income eligibility decision via email. This may take up to 10 business days. Income verification may be requested.
  4. If approved, you will receive an Income Eligibility Code. This code is required to access the higher dollar amount income-eligible rebates. 

Before applying for your rebate, ensure all work is completed by a licensed contractor and collect all necessary supporting documentation. as listed in step two, above. 

How to submit your Home Energy Rebate application: 

  • On our website (fastest): Fill out this Rebate Application Form. Be sure to submit all required documentation as part of the application.
  • Email: Download and fill out the appropriate rebate form. Attach the file and email it to a2zerorebates@michiganenergyoptions.org.
  • Mail:

Application Review:

Your application will be reviewed for completeness and eligibility. If any information is missing, the program support team will contact you to request the necessary details. You will receive a confirmation email when your application is received.

Receive Your Rebate: 

Once your application is reviewed and approved, you will receive your rebate check within 6-8 weeks. 

Electric Yard Care Rebates

Electric yard care equipment is healthier, cleaner, quieter, and easier to maintain. No more gas cans, oil changes, or fumes. With Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO Yard Care Rebates, residents and select businesses can save up to 50% on electric yard care equipment and 100% on manual equipment. These City-administered rebates are simple and substantial.

RESIDENTS

  • LIVE IN ANN ARBOR: Own of rent a residential property in Ann Arbor. 
  • EASY TRADE-IN: Just drop off your old gas equipment of the same type – for example, a gas lawnmower you’re replacing with electric – at Recycle Ann Arbor (2950 E. Ellsworth Rd.). Submit proof of trade-in.
  • GET ONE REBATE FOR EACH UPGRADED TOOL TYPE (mower, etc.) per household.

BUSINESSES

  • PROVIDE YARD CARE OR LANDSCAPING to properties in the City of Ann Arbor.
  • EASY TRADE-IN: Just drop off your old gas equipment of the same quantity at Recycle Ann Arbor (2950 E. Ellsworth Rd.). Submit proof of trade-in.
  • GET UP TO $5,000 PER BUSINESS: You can apply for multiple rebates for similar equipment (details below in “2. Review eligible equipment”).

These City-administered rebates are easy to apply for and stack on top of any in-store offers. Get up to 50% off the cost of electric equipment and 100% off the cost of manual equipment.

If the purchased equipment does not include a battery/charger kit, the cost of two batteries and one charger may be added when calculating the rebate amount.

Take gas-powered equipment to Recycle Ann Arbor’s Drop Off Station at 2950 E Ellsworth Rd, Ann Arbor, MI 48108. Before taking gas equipment to Recycle Ann Arbor, remember to drain it of all fluids (gasoline and oil), or it will not be accepted. Recycle Ann Arbor will provide proof of trade-in via a confirmation form – one form per gas-powered piece of equipment dropped off. 

This confirmation form and proof of purchase must be submitted with your full rebate application within 90 days of purchasing your new equipment.

The Electric Vehicle Rebate program is now closed to new applications. Applications submitted on or prior to October 6, 2026 will be reviewed in the order in which they were received.
