Ann Arbor construction and utility closures

When: 7 a.m. Tuesday, October 7 – 5 p.m. Oct. 10, 2025

Why: Materials Testing Consultants will be closing the eastbound lane of East Huron River Drive to set up soil borings for the US-23 bridge replacement project.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on East Huron River Drive will be detoured south on Huron Parkway, east on Washtenaw Avenue, north on Hogback Road, and back to East Huron River Drive.
  • Westbound vehicles will not be affected.

Why: City Contractor, SAK Construction, will be preparing for utility work.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • All westbound Miller Avenue vehicle traffic will be detoured by traveling south on North Ashley Street, then west on West Ann Street, then south on South First Street and west on Huron Street.
  • All eastbound Miller Avenue vehicle traffic will be detoured by following the existing Miller Avenue detour, traveling East on Huron Street, then north on North First Street, then west on West Ann Street, and north on North Ashley Street.
  • Westbound Miller Avenue pedestrian and bike traffic will be detoured by traveling north at Ashley Street, west on Miller Avenue, and south on First street.
  • Northbound First Street pedestrian and bike traffic will be detoured by traveling west at Ann Street, north at Ann Street, and east at Miller Aveune.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: Allingham Corp will be closing East Liberty Street to set up a crane lift for HVAC equipment.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on East Liberty Street will be detoured south on Thompson Street, east on East William Street, north on Maynard Street, back to East Liberty Street.
  • Westbound vehicles will not be affected.
  • Sidewalk traffic on the south side of East Liberty Street will be detoured to the north side of the road.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Oct. 6-5 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20, 2025

Why: East Edge Excavating will be constructing new utility leads in Packard Street to support the construction of a new building.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Packard Street vehicles will be detoured west on East Stadium Blvd then south on South Industrial Highway then west on Stimson Street then north on South State Street back to Packard Street.
  • Southbound Packard Street vehicles will be detoured south on South State Street then east on Stimson Street then north on South Industrial Highway then east on East Stadium Boulevard back to Packard Street.
  • Northbound Packard Street bicycles will be detoured west on Granger Avenue then north on South State Street back to Packard Street.
  • Southbound Packard Street bicycles will be detoured south on South State Street then east on Granger Avenue back to Packard Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the north side of Packard Street.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.

When: 9 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22 – 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, 2025

Why: The contractor, Cadillac Asphalt, and its subcontractors, will be performing road construction, including partial-depth removal of the existing asphalt pavement; isolated areas of base repairs; minor concrete curb and gutter, sidewalk, and curb ramp removal and replacement; and repaving of the roadway.

Southbound South Seventh Street is closed to vehicle traffic between West Huron Street and West Madison Street.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • East on West Huron Street
  • South on South Ashley Street
  • East on West William Street
  • South on South Main Street
  • West on West Madison Street to South Seventh Street
  • Northbound traffic will be maintained.

North Seventh Street is closed to vehicle traffic in both directions between West Huron Street and Miller Avenue

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • West Huron Street
  • Dexter Avenue
  • North Maple Road
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk and ramp replacement work.
  • Bicycle traffic will be detoured around the work zone using Princeton Avenue, Fifth Street, West Liberty Street, Eighth Street, West Huron Street, Arbana Drive, and Arborview Boulevard.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour when possible. However, emergency vehicle access will be maintained as needed.
  • Access to driveways within the closure areas will be maintained.

When: 9 a.m. Wednesday, September 3 - 5 p.m. Friday, October 17, 2025 *extended closure

Why: Granger Construction will be occupying two lanes of South Huron Parkway to install utilities for the new Fire Station.

Travel impacts: 

  • Travel lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction for the duration of the lane closures.
  • Work will be conducted in two phases. The first phase will shift southbound North Huron Parkway traffic over into the northbound lanes, and the second phase will shift northbound Huron Parkway traffic into the southbound lanes.
  • Access to driveways within the lane closures will be maintained.
  • Pedestrian and bicycle traffic will be maintained on the side of the road. Vehicular traffic is open. For the first phase, pedestrians and cyclists will have access maintained on the east side of North Huron Parkway. For the second phase, access will be maintained on the west side of North Huron Parkway.

Why: City contractor Fonson will be installing an underground water main and repairing the concrete road.

Detour route and other travel impacts: 

  • All northbound vehicle and bicycle traffic will be detoured by traveling west on East Eisenhower Parkway, then north on South State Street, and east on Stimson Street.
  • Only southbound traffic will be maintained on South Industrial. Pedestrian access will be unaffected.
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

Why: The University of Michigan is occupying the full width of Zina Pitcher Place to construct a new parking structure.

Detour route and other travel impacts: 

  • Vehicles traveling north on Zina Pitcher Place will be detoured west on East Ann Street, then detour north on Glen Avenue to Catherine Street.
  • Catherine Street east of Glen Avenue will be temporarily converted to two-way traffic to allow access to the entrance of the University of Michigan Catherine Street parking structure located near Zina Pitcher Place. 
  • Emergency vehicles are advised to follow the posted detour.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the east side of Zina Pitcher Place and the north side of Catherine Street.

Why: Closed for ongoing work associated with the State Street Watermain and Resurfacing Project

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Vehicles traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Hill Street to South Forest Avenue to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to Geddes Road to North University Avenue.
  • Vehicles traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of North University to Geddes Road to Washtenaw Avenue (Business Route 94) to South Forest Avenue to Hill Street.
  • Cyclists traveling northbound should follow the posted detour of Packard Road to South Division Street to East William Street.
  • Cyclists traveling southbound should follow the posted detour of East William Street to South Division Street to Packard Road.
  • Pedestrians should follow posted detour routes due to sidewalk closures along State Street.

When: 7 a.m. Thursday, July 17 - 5 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025

Why: City contractor Fonson will be installing underground watermain and storm sewer work.

Detour route and other travel impacts:

  • Eastbound vehicles traveling on Miller Avenue will be detoured south on North Maple Road, then east on Dexter Avenue to east on West Huron Street, then north on North First Street to Miller Avenue.
  • Westbound vehicles will be detoured south on North First Street, then west on West Huron Street, then west on Dexter Avenue, then north on North Maple Road to Miller Avenue.
  • Cyclists are advised to travel to and from downtown Ann Arbor via Miller Avenue west of Seventh, using North and South Seventh Streets and West Washington Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained, with detours posted as necessary during sidewalk replacement work.
  • Emergency vehicles should use the posted detour whenever possible. However, access for emergency vehicles will be maintained as needed.
  • Access to driveways within the closure will be maintained.

When: 7 a.m. Monday, Feb. 10, 2025 – 7 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 1, 2027

Why: The private development at 711 Church Street will require a lane closure of the northbound traffic lane of Church Street to construct their new apartment building. 

Detours and other travel impacts:

  • Northbound Church Street traffic will be detoured west onto Hill Street, north onto East University Avenue, ease onto Willard Street, and then north back to Church Street.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of Church Street.

Special Event Closures

From 3 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12, 2025, many sections of roads will be closed for the Ann Arbor Marathon special event. The race will begin at 7 a.m., and the path of the marathon is as follows:

  • Start on Ashley heading south
  • Left on Liberty
  • Right on State
  • Left on South University
  • Left on pedestrian mall (sidewalk)
  • Follow along and cross North University
  • Take the path to the right of the Biological Sciences Building and head straight to the CCRB bridge
  • Make your way across the bridge, along the path until you come to Observatory Street
  • Turn right on Observatory, then left on Geddes
  • Slight right to stay on Geddes
  • Do not turn left into Arboretum — 10K only
  • Left on Huron Parkway
  • Left on E. Huron River Drive
  • Loop left on Dixboro (not Old Dixboro)
  • Left turn (before the light at Geddes) to go down to the Dixboro Dam
  • Left on Gallup Park Pathway
  • Stay on Gallup Park Pathway for 0.64 miles, all the way to Parker Mill
  • Stay right at the fork in the path to continue under Geddes Road
  • Stay on path straight through to Dixboro Road
  • Cross Dixboro Road
  • Cross Geddes Road and continue on the sidewalk (stay on sidewalk)
  • Sidewalk ends after Concordia College — continue onto Geddes Road (stay left)
  • Cross Huron Parkway and move to the sidewalk on the right side of Fuller Road
  • At the traffic light, slight left to cross Fuller Road to Fuller Court
  • Left to get back on Fuller Road
  • Left on E. Medical Center Drive
  • Left into Medical Center parking lot
  • Enter Arboretum
  • Right at SOS box by tables across from river
  • Up the hill, bearing right (do not go on stairs)
  • Exit Arboretum on Washington Heights
  • Left on Observatory
  • Right on sidewalk across CCRB bridge
  • Follow along and cross North University
  • Left on pedestrian mall (sidewalk)
  • Right on South University
  • Right on State
  • Left on Liberty

These closures will occur for all U-M home football games, beginning with the home opener Saturday, ​Aug.​ 30. The scheduled closures are the same as those during the past several football seasons:

  • East Keech Street between South Main Street and Greene
  • Closure of the westbound right turn lane of East Stadium Boulevard onto South Main Street just south of Michigan Stadium
  • Closing South Main Street to both local and through traffic from Stadium Boulevard to Pauline
  • Limited access to parking permit holders on Greene Street from East Hoover to Keech

The duration of these closures will be three hours prior to each game until the end of each game. The exception is southbound South Main Street, which will be closed one hour prior to the games until the end of each game. See a map of these closures (PDF). University of Michigan home football games are scheduled for Saturdays,

Please also note that the road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect for the major concert event (Zach Bryan) scheduled to take place at Michigan Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 27.

Thursdays at 4 p.m. through Mondays at 6 a.m. from June 1 through Sept. 30, 2025, the following streets will be closed as part of the downtown closures for restaurant and retail use (PDF):

  • Main Street from William to Washington
  • West Liberty Street from Ashley to Main Street
  • East Liberty Street from Main Street to Fourth Avenue
  • West Washington Street from Ashley to Main Street
