Welcome to the Sustainable Energy Utility

Ann Arbor residents voted to authorize Proposal A: Creation of a Sustainable Energy Utility, in November 2024. The Sustainable Energy Utility (SEU) will be an opt-in, supplemental, community-owned energy utility that provides 100% renewable energy from local solar and battery storage systems installed at participating homes and businesses in the city. Now authorized, the detailed final planning and design work to officially launch the SEU can begin in earnest, with a goal of utility launch within 18–24 months. The Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility An opt-in, supplemental, community-owned, 100% renewable energy utility that uses local solar and battery storage systems and networked geothermal systems installed at participating homes and businesses in Ann Arbor.

Hello, friends of the SEU,

It’s been a busy start to the new year. In the next week, we have two opportunities for the public to learn about the SEU, so please read on and join us at upcoming events!

Jan. 27, 2026, at 6 p.m. is the 15th annual Sustainability Forum: "New Initiatives for a New Year: Paving a Path for Sustainability Progress in 2026." Join us in person or watch the livestream to learn more about the SEU and ask your questions. Learn more about the series.
On Jan. 29, 2026, at 7 p.m., join a virtual presentation about the SEU, hosted by the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association (GLREA) as part of their weekly Solar Stories series. Register to receive the link.

The SEU was featured in The Communicator - The Community High School magazine, and re-printed by the Youth Environmental Press Team. We’re grateful for our local youth community’s interest!
The SEU closed a request for billing software proposals. We are evaluating the nine responses, and anticipate selecting a preferred vendor this month.
We hosted a workshop for solar and battery storage contractors to learn about, and share input on, the SEU’s proposed operational and technical approach. We are grateful to nearly 40 attendees who joined us! A recording of the workshop presentation is available.
