Insulate Ann Arbor pilot offering $1 million in incentives to multifamily rental properties pursuing energy efficiency

Through a new collaboration between the City of Ann Arbor and DTE Energy, money is available to help multifamily rental property owners make investments that lower energy costs and improve building performance.

A new collaboration between the City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations and DTE Energy is offering up to $1 million in combined rebates, to qualified multifamily rental properties installing energy efficiency upgrades. The pilot program, Insulate Ann Arbor, offers rebates for insulation and air sealing upgrades that improve comfort, reduce energy costs, and make multifamily rental buildings healthier, more affordable, and more sustainable.

Insulate Ann Arbor provides up to $75,000 or 50% of total project costs (whichever is lower) per multifamily rental property in Ann Arbor that undertakes air sealing or insulation projects. For income-qualified properties, the rebates increase to $250,000 or 90% of total project costs (whichever is lower) per property for all rebated measures. Funding is available until fully allocated.  Interested properties can learn about the available rebates and start their application on the Insulate Ann Arbor website.

Insulate Ann Arbor came together through the Heating Franchise signed by the City of Ann Arbor and DTE Energy last year. The funding is provided by the DTE Energy Efficiency Program and the City of Ann Arbor’s Community Climate Action Millage. The projects being funded will help multifamily rental properties more affordably come into compliance with the Green Rental Housing ordinance. Smaller rental properties pursuing energy efficiency can still access Ann Arbor’s Home Energy Rebates.

“We believe that everyone should be able to live in healthy, safe, and energy-efficient housing, and we are delighted to collaborate with DTE to bring this exciting new program to Ann Arbor,” said Dr. Missy Stults, City of Ann Arbor Sustainability and Innovations director. “I’m incredibly grateful for the staff at DTE and the city, and for all the renters, landlords, and property managers that helped to shape our rental work over the last few years, including the vision for Insulate Ann Arbor.”

“We’re proud to partner with the City of Ann Arbor Office of Sustainability and Innovations on the Insulate Ann Arbor  pilot program to help make energy-saving upgrades more accessible and affordable for multifamily property owners,” said Sakinah Howard, energy efficiency manager, DTE Energy.” “By improving insulation and air sealing, these projects can help lower energy costs, improve comfort for residents and support healthier, more efficient buildings.”
