Archived News Release: May 15, 2023 - The community is invited to meet their local first responders and learn how they serve and protect at the annual Ann Arbor Police and Firefighters Open House! The free, outdoor event takes place Saturday, May 20, 2023, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., on Fifth Avenue between Huron and East Ann streets, alongside fire station No. 1, 111 N. Fifth Ave. Kids and kids-at-heart will be able to:

Get up close and personal with fire and police vehicles.
Watch vehicle extrications.
Learn how to use a fire extinguisher.
Gain information on burn prevention and emergency preparedness.

And though it certainly can be, the event doesn't have to be all fun and games. Notes Ann Arbor Police Sgt. Mark Pulford, it's also a great time to explore the exciting career paths of a police officer or firefighter. Pulford said event goers can meet officers from diverse specialty career paths including detectives, K-9 handlers, evidence technicians, underwater divers, bicycle officers, crisis negotiators and more. “This is your chance to ignite your passion for making a difference in your community," he said. “Who knows, you may discover your true calling!" In addition, those interested in specifically pursuing a career with the AAPD can stop by the recruiting booth to talk with Sgt. Jaime Crawford, AAPD Recruiting/Training Unit ([email protected]).
There are 102 sworn Ann Arbor police officers included in the overall staff of 129. The AAPD consists of many services and divisions, including a detective section, traffic services unit, K9, motorcycle and bicycle patrols, as well as a community engagement unit. The Ann Arbor Fire Department has 72 firefighters assigned to three shifts. Firefighters work a 24-hour shift that starts at 7 a.m. and goes until 7 a.m. the following day. Firefighters are then off duty for 48 hours. Minimum daily staffing is 18 personnel assigned to five stations. Visit AAFD online at www.a2gov.org/fire.
The City of Ann Arbor Police and Firefighters Open House has become a staple over the years, providing a fun, inclusive opportunity for the community to connect with police and fire personnel. The departments are committed to outreach and engagement, offering station tours, AAPD ride alongs, speaking events at schools and neighborhood meetings and volunteer programs.
