Ann Arbor Selects New Chief Human Resources and Labor Relations Officer

Archived News Release: June 24, 2022 - ​The City of Ann Arbor has selected Debra Buckson as its new chief human resources and labor relations officer. Buckson will be responsible for the overall leadership and direction of city human resources programs including organizational development, benefits, compensation, recruitment, employee development, employee health and wellness, as well as serving as the city's chief labor negotiator. Her start date is July 25.  

Buckson has more than 25 years of human resources and labor relations experience. She most recently served as vice president of administration and human resources for American Roads (operating the Detroit Windsor Tunnel and Alabama Toll Operations) and served in that role for almost seven years. Prior to joining American Roads, she served as vice president of human resources for THI (Truck Heroes Inc. formerly known as Tectum Holdings Inc.) in Ann Arbor where she worked for over three years. Prior to THI, Buckson spent seven years at PMA Consultants as corporate director of human resources. 

Buckson has a master's degree in business administration from Eastern Michigan University with a concentration in human resources management and a graduate certificate in human resources management. She is a certified senior professional in human resources and has earned a senior certified professional certification from the Society of Human Resources Management.  

“Debra's education and work experiences have given her a broad knowledge and depth in all aspects of HR management," said Ann Arbor City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. “I expect her to work in close partnership with our director of organizational equity, once they are hired, to help ensure the city operates in a positive and inclusive manner."​
