Archived News Release: October 31, 2018 - ​At approximately 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2018, the City of Ann Arbor was notified of water leaking from a manhole near Concordia University. Upon further investigation, City Public Works crews identified this as a sanitary sewer overflow. Crews immediately mobilized to unblock the sewer and clear debris from the sanitary sewer pipe. The blockage appears to have been caused by an abundance of what are marketed as flushable wipes and paper products.

An estimated 105,000 gallons of sewage discharged into a wooded area, adjacent to the Huron River, ultimately flowing to the river.

In accordance with regulatory protocols, City of Ann Arbor staff has notified the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality.
