Materials Recovery Facility Oct. 25 Open House

Archived News Release: October 10, 2014 - Wonder what happens to those empty milk cartons and cereal boxes after the truck collects your cart each week? Find out during a free, behind-the-scenes tour during an open house at Ann Arbor’s Materials Recovery Facility from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 25.

“The tour will give a general introduction to recycling in Ann Arbor and include a guided tour of the recycling plant,” according to MacKenzie Maxwell, environmental educator at the Ecology Center who coordinates the program. “Visitors will also be able to participate in a hands-on recycling activity by making a repurposed bag from an old t-shirt.”

Long pants and closed-toed shoes are required for touring the facility. Children under 6 are not allowed on the floor tour, but additional age-appropriate activities will be available for them. Groups of five or more must register in advance by emailing [email protected]

Open houses are held monthly at the Materials Recovery Facility which is located at 4150 Platt Road. The 2014-2015 schedule can be found online at ecocenter.org/education/mrf-open-house. Weekday tours of the facility are also available for groups of 15 or more; contact [email protected] or 734-663-9474 for details.
