What are greenhouse gases?
Greenhouse
gases are gases that trap heat in the atmosphere, causing global
warming and climate change. The community greenhouse gas inventory
tracks the carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide emissions that
occur when fossil fuels are combusted, organic material anaerobically
decomposes, and other processes.
Why measure?
Tracking
our community's greenhouse gas emissions lets us know our current
impact on the climate, and our progress on reducing emissions to date.
It also informs the design of the A2ZERO Climate Action Plan.
We
measure emissions at the city level because cities create over 70% of
global greenhouse gas emissions. But cities also represent an
opportunity to reduce emissions through more efficient infrastructure
and planning, providing residents with a better quality of life and
lower carbon footprint than areas outside of cities.
