Weekly curbside compost collection resumes in Ann Arbor April 6

The City of Ann Arbor will resume weekly curbside compost collection Monday, April 6, with service continuing through early December.

How to participate

Residents can set out compostable materials using any of the following methods:

  • Compost carts — 64- or 96-gallon carts approved for curbside pickup
  • Paper yard bags — up to 10 bags per collection day (April through September), expanding to 20 bags during fall leaf season beginning in October; each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds
  • Bundled brush and tree limbs — bundles must be tied with natural twine, no more than 18 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length; individual limbs must be less than 6 inches in diameter

Residents may also drop off materials at the Ann Arbor Compost Facility, 4170 Platt Road, at no charge, up to 1 cubic yard per household per day.

Free compost carts

Single-family residential properties are eligible for one free 64- or 96-gallon compost cart. To request a cart, contact Ann Arbor Customer Service at 734.994.7336 or customerservice@a2gov.org. Pickup is free; delivery and additional carts are available for a fee.

Cart and container placement

All carts and bundles must be placed at the curb before 7 a.m. on the scheduled collection day, with at least 3 feet of clearance between carts and from any overhead obstacles. On narrow streets, carts should be placed on lawn extensions. Residents on streets with bike lanes should review placement requirements at www.a2gov.org/trash-recycle-compost/carts-cart-placement.

Paper yard bags and bundled brush/tree limbs

Paper yard bags can be used for yard trimmings such as tree leaves, small twigs, weeds and other vegetation. For April through September, there is a 10 bag per-property limit, which expands to 20 for fall leaf season starting in October. Each bag must weigh less than 50 pounds.

Bundled brush or tree limbs, 4 feet or less, can be tied with natural twine in bundles up to 18 inches in diameter, no more than 4 feet in length, and left at the curb for pickup. Individual tree limbs must be less than 6 inches in diameter.

Compost carts and/or bundles must be placed at the curb before 7 a.m. on the weekly collection day, with at least 3 feet between each cart and clearance from any overhead obstacles. On narrow streets, carts must be placed on lawn extensions. Properties on streets with various types of bike lanes will have different placement requirements [https://www.a2gov.org/trash-recycle-compost/carts-cart-placement/ ]for their carts.

Disposing of yard trimmings or waste in parks constitutes illegal dumping and is strictly prohibited.

Free compost available Saturdays beginning April 11

Ann Arbor residents can pick up free compost at the Ann Arbor Compost Facility, 4170 Platt Road, from 7 to 11 a.m. every Saturday, April 11 through June 27, or while supplies last.

Residents must present a valid driver's license or ID showing a City of Ann Arbor address. Each household is limited to 1 cubic yard — approximately three paper yard waste bags — per year.

Staff will not be on hand to assist, so residents should bring their own shovels and containers.
