Public invited to Fire Station No. 4 grand opening and dedication Oct. 30

The City of Ann Arbor invites the community to celebrate the grand opening of the newly rebuilt Fire Station No. 4, 2415 S. Huron Parkway, Friday, Oct. 30, at 1 p.m. The ceremony will officially dedicate the station in honor of Mindy Kerr, Ann Arbor's first female firefighter.

Kerr served the Ann Arbor Fire Department from 1980 until her retirement in 2005. Naming the station in her honor recognizes her pioneering service and contributions to the department.

Originally constructed in 1966, Fire Station No. 4 has been rebuilt to better serve firefighters and the community. The new facility is Michigan's first net-zero, carbon-neutral fire station, featuring geothermal heating and cooling, solar power generation, modern living accommodations and improved emergency vehicle access. It is Ann Arbor's first new fire station since 1981.

The celebration will include remarks from city leaders and a ceremonial uncoupling of a fire hose. The station will also be open for the public to tour and visitors can see “Three Ladder Fire,” a 24-foot-tall public art installation by artist Christopher Fennell that transforms decommissioned Ann Arbor Fire Department ladders into a sculpted flame.
