Maize and blue ambulance rolls into service in Ann Arbor ahead of Michigan Football home opener

A new maize-and-blue ambulance with a design reminiscent of a University of Michigan football helmet is joining the Ann Arbor Fire Department fleet just in time for the first Michigan home football game of the season, when visiting fans place additional demands on public safety and emergency medical services.

The University of Michigan provided $346,000 for the new 2026 Wheeled Coach Type III Ambulance, which was purchased through Emergency Vehicle Plus in Holland, Michigan.

While its distinctive maize-and-blue appearance gives a nod to the University of Michigan, the ambulance will serve an important public safety role throughout Ann Arbor. It will provide additional emergency medical transport capacity during periods of high demand, including major community events such as the Ann Arbor Art Fair and concerts at Michigan Stadium.

The additional ambulance will also help the Fire Department consistently have two ambulances available during Michigan home football weekends. Having a third vehicle in the fleet provides flexibility when one the city’s ambulances is undergoing maintenance.

“The maize and blue will certainly make this ambulance stand out, but what’s most important is the additional emergency response capacity it provides our community,” said Ann Arbor Fire Chief Mike Kennedy. “We appreciate the University of Michigan funding this ambulance and helping us ensure we have reliable resources available during football weekends and other times of increased demand.”

The ambulance has been licensed by the State of Michigan and officially entered service Thursday, Sept. 3, operating out of Ann Arbor Fire Station 1 downtown.
