Learn about Division Street bikeway extension Sept. 23 -and- Broadway/Plymouth safety improvements Nov. 9

The City of Ann Arbor and Ann Arbor Downtown Development Authority are hosting an open house on Wednesday, Sept. 23, to answer questions about the continuation of the two-way bikeway from Catherine Street to the south end of the Broadway Bridge.

In addition, the city has scheduled a public meeting in November to discuss safety improvements from the southern end of the Broadway Street Bridge to the Broadway Street/Plymouth Road intersection.

Residents and others who use these corridors are encouraged to attend both meetings and provide feedback on proposed designs:

Division Street Bikeway Extension Open House

WHAT: An opportunity for residents and others to drop in and learn more about the planned continuation of the two-way bikeway from Catherine Street to the south end of the Broadway Bridge as well as coordinated water main replacement and road resurfacing.
WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
WHERE: DDA offices, 415 N. 5th Ave. (located in the Kerrytown Shops on the 2nd floor, right next to V2V clothing boutique)

Broadway/Plymouth Safety Improvements Public Meeting

WHAT: Design concepts for improving safety on Broadway Street from the south end of the Broadway Bridge to the intersection with Plymouth Road will be presented.
WHEN: Monday, Nov. 9, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
WHERE: City Hall, 301 E. Huron St.

The November public meeting was prompted by several recent developments that require the city to conduct additional analysis before completing a design concept for the Broadway/Plymouth portion of the project. Those factors include:

• Broadway Park West development: Additional analysis is needed to account for the installation of a center left-turn lane on the Broadway Bridge to serve the Broadway Park West development.
• Maiden Lane/Moore Street improvements: The city recently received funding through the federal Carbon Reduction Program to modernize and upgrade the intersection of Maiden Lane/Moore Street with Plymouth Road. The potential changes to this intersection need to be incorporated into the broader traffic analysis.
• Emergency access: Working with the Ann Arbor Fire Department, it was determined that the proposed bikeway cannot serve as a fire lane, adding another consideration to the design of the bridge and surrounding roadway.

These conditions emerged after analysis completed through the Ann Arbor Roadway Rightsizing initiative and require further study of how the corridor should function for people biking and walking, riding transit, and driving while also maintaining emergency response access.

The additional analysis is not a decision to abandon planned improvements to the Broadway Bridge or the bicycle connection to the north side. Rather, the city is taking additional time to evaluate the new conditions before advancing a design.

Traffic analysis is expected to be completed in October. The November meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to review the resulting design concept and discuss next steps for the Broadway/Plymouth safety improvements.
