City Seeking Expressions of Interest in Hosting Public Electric Vehicle Charging

Federal funding will be leveraged to expand Ann Arbor’s public electric vehicle charging network.

The City of Ann Arbor is seeking Expressions of Interest in Hosting Public Electric Vehicle Charging. Thanks to federal funding via the Charging and Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) program, the City of Ann Arbor is poised to create a comprehensive electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) network. Over the next 18–24 months, the city is looking to build 50 additional EVCS across city-owned and private sites. These stations will be a combination of Level 2 and fast charging, with the grant and city covering up to 95% of total project costs.

To move this vision forward, the city is currently soliciting expressions of interest from organizations that may want to host publicly accessible EV charging stations. Sites of particular interest are community institutions (such as libraries or community centers), multifamily residential properties and private retail businesses. Organizations interested are encouraged to learn more, verify they meet the required criteria and express their interest by filling out the city’s brief survey.

“Expanding electric vehicle charging opportunities throughout Ann Arbor is an important part of our work to support beneficial electrification,” said Dr. Missy Stults, director of the Office of Sustainability and Innovations. “It’s something that’s tangible and will meaningfully impact the accessibility of electric vehicles for everyone.”

In December 2024, The City of Ann Arbor was awarded a Charging & Fueling Infrastructure (CFI) grant with the goal of building a public electric vehicle charging station network that is affordable, safe, reliable and widely accessible. The funding allows Ann Arbor to address gaps in charging infrastructure, particularly in low-income areas, multifamily properties and large retail locations. The city is working with a variety of stakeholders including community organizations, local schools and libraries, residential neighborhoods and the private sector.

This work is a part of A2ZERO, the City of Ann Arbor’s plan, vision, framework and associated actions to achieve a just and equitable transition to carbon-neutrality, community-wide, by the year 2030. Details about electric vehicles in Ann Arbor and how they fit into A2ZERO are featured on a2zero.org.
