City of Ann Arbor Announces New Residential Rebates for Rakes and Electric Leaf Blowers
The City of Ann Arbor just launched a new rebate program specifically for rakes and electric leaf blowers beginning November 21, 2025, through the end of the year, or until funding is expended. Designed to help lower the cost of transitioning from gas to electric leaf blowers in accordance with Ann Arbor's leaf blower ordinance, these rebates will be available to all Ann Arbor residents.
Ann Arbor’s rake and electric leaf blower rebates can be used to purchase any rake or electric/battery-powered leaf blowers at any retailer. The rebate amount will be 100% of the cost of a new rake or 50% of the cost of a new electric leaf blower upto $100 with a maximum of one rebate per household. To receive a rebate, residents will be required to trade in an old gas-powered leaf blower by recycling it through the process laid out on the City of Ann Arbor’s leaf blower phase-out webpage.
Residents can also save thousands of dollars for home energy improvements through the City of Ann Arbor’s A2ZERO Home Energy Rebates. These rebates cover measures such as heat pumps, water heaters, battery storage, induction cooktops, electrical upgrades, insulation and air sealing, and more. In December 2023, Ann Arbor City Council passed new restrictions on the use of gas-powered leaf blowers within Ann Arbor city limits, prohibiting their use in the summer months (from June 1 through September 30) through 2027. Beginning in 2028, this ordinance will fully prohibit the use of gas-powered leaf blowers throughout the entire year. The purpose of this ordinance is not only to promote the City’s sustainability goals by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, but also to protect the health and welfare of Ann Arbor residents by reducing noise and air pollution in the community.
All of the above-mentioned rebates are funded by the 2022 Community Climate Action Millage, a millage approved by Ann Arbor residents to fund climate action. More information about rake and electric leaf blower rebates, including how to apply, as well as additional information on the leaf blower ordinance and alternatives to gas-powered leaf blowers is available at osi.a2gov.org/leafblowers.
This work is part of A2ZERO, the City of Ann Arbor’s plan, vision, framework, and associated actions for a just and equitable transition to carbon neutrality, community-wide, by the year 2030. To learn more and find out where you fit in, visit a2zero.org.
