City, AAPS & First Responders to Conduct Active Assailant Response Exercise June 24

The City of Ann Arbor is announcing plans to conduct a large-scale active assailant exercise on Tuesday, June 24, at Pioneer High School (601 W. Stadium Blvd., Ann Arbor) in collaboration with Ann Arbor Public Schools, local hospitals, fire, police and EMS personnel.
The exercise, which will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., is for participating emergency responders only. The Pioneer High School campus will be closed to the public during this time. All are encouraged to avoid the area and use alternate routes due to increased emergency vehicle activity.
“The safety of Ann Arbor Public Schools students and staff is our highest priority. This active assailant training exercise allows AAPS to work closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders to ensure we are fully prepared in the event of a real emergency," said Liz Margolis, executive director of school safety and district operations. "While we hope we never have to use these skills, preparation is key to protecting our school community."
The drill will assess the preparedness and coordinated response of participating agencies in the event of an active assailant situation. Participants will focus on interagency communication, swift threat neutralization and the effective treatment and transport of simulated victims.
“This type of training is vital to ensure we are ready to respond quickly and effectively in the event of a real emergency,” said Sydney Parmenter, City of Ann Arbor emergency management coordinator. “The safety of our community depends on strong coordination among agencies, and exercises like this help us identify strengths and areas for improvement.”
