Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility marks milestone with first installations in Bryant Neighborhood
The Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility’s first solar panel and battery storage systems were installed on homes in the Bryant neighborhood Monday, May 18, as part of a grant-supported pilot project.
“We’re excited residents of our Bryant neighborhood now have an energy choice — the SEU, 100% renewable, reliable, affordable energy,” said Ann Arbor Mayor Christopher Taylor. “Some SEU customers are also receiving new no-cost windows, efficient appliances, insulation and even roofs — all with no new taxes.”
Two homes are now connected to receive and store renewable, reliable and affordable energy from the Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility. Approximately 100 homes in the Bryant neighborhood are slated for SEU installations before the pilot wraps up later this year. In the Bryant neighborhood pilot, home improvements needed for solar panel and battery installation, such as roof replacements and repairs, are also included, with grant support from the Michigan Public Service Commission and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity.
“It’s been a joy to partner and make history with Bryant residents as we launch the Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility pilot program,” said SEU Executive Director Shoshannah Lenski. “We’ve had an enthusiastic response from community members from the start, even before we gathered for the kickoff meeting in early March. Residents have expressed excitement about the SEU’s reliability and affordability, but also that they’re thrilled to be taking part in promoting a cleaner, healthier environment for future generations.”
Bruce Schauer's home is the first SEU installation. He has lived in his Hemlock Drive home for 39 years and said he's wanted solar for a very long time. "I'm 80 years old and my daughter will eventually get this house. It makes me feel great to have the solar done now. It's just a relief," said Schauer. “I wouldn't have been able to do it by myself. I just want to say thank you for everything."
The Ann Arbor Sustainable Energy Utility is a first-of-its-kind municipal energy utility. It is optional and supplemental — meaning SEU customers will remain connected to the existing power grid — as well as community-owned. It will provide residents and businesses with 100% local, renewable and clean energy solutions. Ann Arbor voters authorized the creation of the Sustainable Energy Utility in November 2024.
Installations of SEU equipment beyond the Bryant neighborhood are expected to begin in 2027. Ann Arbor residents and businesses can learn more and express interest in service — with no commitment required — at www.A2SEU.com.
