Ann Arbor shares information ahead of Aug. 4 Election Day

The Local and State Primary Election is Tuesday, Aug. 4, with Ann Arbor polling places open 7 a.m.–8 p.m. The Ann Arbor City Clerk’s Office is sharing information on how to prepare, where to vote, when to vote (hint: no need to wait for Aug. 4), and more:

Step 1 — Get “election ready”

Do you need to register to vote in Ann Arbor? Find out your voter registration status and, if needed, register *online, by visiting the Michigan Voter Information Center “register to vote” page. City residents can also print and fill out a voter registration form (PDF) to submit by mail, email, fax or in person to the Ann Arbor City Clerk's Office.

*Note, after July 21, city residents who have not yet registered and wish to vote in the Primary Election must turn in their application, with proof of residency, in person to the Ann Arbor City Clerk's Office, second floor of Larcom City Hall, 301 E. Huron St., during business hours, Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–noon | 1–5 p.m. The clerk’s office will also be open extended hours:

  • Saturday, July 25–Sunday, July 26, 9 a.m.–7 p.m.
  • Monday, July 27–Friday, July 31, 8 a.m.–7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Aug. 1–Sunday, Aug. 2, 9 a.m.–7 p.m.
  • Monday, Aug. 3, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Election Day, Tuesday, Aug. 4, 7 a.m.–8 p.m.

Voters can read and learn about local ballot proposals on the city elections webpage and can even find their sample ballot on the Michigan Voter Information Center. In addition, watch the League of Women Voters of Washtenaw County candidate forums, streaming on the Ann Arbor CTN YouTube Channel.

Step 2 — Decide how you will cast your ballot

Plan ahead, and the method-of-voting choice can be yours! Here are the options:

  • Absentee ballot — Voters on the permanent absent voter (AV) application list should have already received their AV applications in the mail in May or June. Ballots were mailed June 25 automatically to those voters on the new permanent ballot mailing list and to any other voters who submitted applications. Ballots continue to be mailed daily as applications are received. Those interested in voting absentee and still in need of a ballot or wanting to learn more can find all the details on the city absentee voting page. Residents voting absentee who already have their ballot can drop it off (voted, signed and sealed) at Larcom City Hall or any other designated city drop box; voted ballots can also be mailed in, postage paid, time permitting. All ballots must be received in the City Cerk’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day, Aug. 4.
    • Please note, the ballot drop box once at Veterans Memorial Park has been temporarily moved (PDF) next door to Fire Station No. 3 due to onsite construction. Please do not use the emergency vehicle driveway, and please instead access the ballot drop box from Jackson Place.
  • Early voting, in person — Registered voters in Ann Arbor have the opportunity to tabulate their ballot in person during the nine days of early voting. Ann Arbor early voting sites will be open Saturday, July 25–Sunday, Aug. 2, at the following locations:
    • Larcom City Hall, hours: 9 a.m.–5 p.m.
    • Traverwood Library Branch, hours: 11 a.m.–7 p.m.
    • Malletts Creek Library Branch, hours: 11 a.m.–7 p.m.
    • Westgate Library Branch, hours: 11 a.m.–7 p.m.
  • On Election Day, Aug. 4, at assigned polling place — Prefer to vote in person on Election Day? Registered voters can find their in-person polling location information on the Michigan Voter Information site, or see the list of Ann Arbor precincts (PDF). Don’t forget to check the Election Day line tracker to check on the number of people waiting in line and the estimated wait time (if any) before heading to the polls. Please also note:

Step 3 — R&R (relax & results)

Once voting is over, your responsibility, for the moment, is done!

However you decide to vote, you can put your civic pride on display with an Ann Arbor “I voted” digital “sticker.” Voters casting or dropping off their ballot in person can also pause for a selfie in front of an I voted/#a2votes” backdrop (be sure to #a2votes in your post!).

To keep up with results after 8 p.m. on Election Day evening, visit the Washtenaw County Clerk results website.
