Ann Arbor police chief, former Ferguson, Missouri, interim chief is Memorial Social Justice Symposium featured presenter May 19
The Ann Arbor Independent Community Police Oversight Commission (ICPOC) and Ann Arbor Police Department are partnering to present the second annual Ann Arbor Memorial Social Justice Symposium. All are invited to the free symposium, which will feature Ann Arbor Police Chief Andre Anderson.
Ann Arbor Memorial Social Justice Symposium
- Date: Tuesday, May 19
- Time: 6–8 p.m.
- Location: New Hope Baptist Church, 218 Chapin St., Ann Arbor
- Please RSVP: https://url.a2gov.org/socialjusticemay2026
Chief Anderson will share reflections on the protests in Ferguson, Missouri, where he previously served as interim police chief. Chief Anderson will address the lasting impacts, more than a decade later, on modern policing and community relations, and the symposium will also explore the broader history of protest and the significance within the Ann Arbor community.
With more than three-decades in law enforcement and community policing, Chief Anderson has led successful conclusions to civil unrest in Ferguson, as well as in Rochester, New York. He has been instrumental in easing tension, creating better relationships in the community, introducing and leading modern-day evidence-based community policing and was the initial lead policing expert to negotiate with the Department of Justice Consent Decree levied as a "Pattern or Practice of Discriminatory Policing." For his role in Ferguson, he was inducted into the National Law Enforcement Museum, Washington, DC.
The Independent Police Oversight Commission’s vision is to foster a transparent and mutually beneficial relationship between the Ann Arbor Police Department and the community at large.
