Ann Arbor Announces New Director of Communications to Begin in November

The City of Ann Arbor announces the hiring of Steve Kilar as its next director of communications, following a national search. Kilar will begin on Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, reporting to Deputy City Administrator Mariah Walton.

City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. expressed appreciation for the many contributions of retiring Communications Director Lisa Wondrash, who joined the city in October 2005.

Kilar joins Ann Arbor with an extensive background in journalism, public relations, and higher education communications. Most recently, he served as associate director of news for The Arizona Republic. His previous experience includes reporter for The Baltimore Sun, communications director for the ACLU of Arizona, and director of brand management and communications for Arizona State University’s Morrison Institute for Public Policy.

Before beginning his career in journalism and communications, Kilar practiced law in New York City. He holds a bachelor’s in English from Brown University, a master’s in journalism from the University of Maryland, and a law degree from the University of Michigan.

“Steve brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and expertise that will serve the City of Ann Arbor well,” said City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. “We’re excited to welcome him back to Michigan and look forward to his leadership in advancing our communications efforts.”

Dohoney added, “Effective communication is vital to how our city connects with our community, shares information transparently, and builds trust. With Steve’s leadership and depth of experience and collaborative approach, I’m confident he will strengthen our ability to engage our community and effectively tell Ann Arbor’s story.”

“Ann Arbor is the best hands down,” Kilar said. “Thoughtful, creative residents make Ann Arbor thrive, and I’m eager to help them get the information they need to keep the city moving forward.”

Wondrash’s last day with the city was Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025. During the transition period, City Communications Manager Joanna Satterlee will serve as interim communications director.
