Ann Arbor Public Art Commission Announces Community Voice Award Winner

Archived News Release: June 21, 2022 - The Ann Arbor Public Art Commission is announcing Artist David Zinn's “Laughing at Clouds" as the winner of the 2021 Golden Paintbrush Community Voice Award, earning 65 of the 167 votes cast. Zinn created a mural of the iconic scene in which Gene Kelly sings, dances and swings from a lamppost in the rain. He created a fun illusion incorporating a real lamppost on the sidewalk. Gene Kelly's daughter, Kerry Kelly Noviak, is a long-time resident of Ann Arbor.

“David Zinn is a staple of the Ann Arbor arts community, and we are incredibly lucky to enjoy his talent on a regular basis in our city," explained Sarah Fuller, chair of the Ann Arbor Art Commission. “David Zinn's 'Laughing at Clouds' mural reminded audiences that you can laugh on rainy days. Humor breeds hope and allows us to prevail through the toughest of times. A particularly poignant sentiment to reflect upon as we continue to move forward through the pandemic."

Submissions for the 2022 Golden Paintbrush Awards will be accepted this-coming July. Visit www.a2gov.org/golden for more information.
