Archived News Release: June 13, 2019 - On Monday, July 1, City Council will consider a recommendation by Ann Arbor's City Administrator Howard Lazarus to appoint Michael Cox to Police Chief. If confirmed by City Council, Cox is expected to begin leading the Ann Arbor Police Department on July 15, 2019.
Since 2018, Cox has served with the Boston, Massachusetts, Police Department as the bureau chief, Bureau of Professional Development superintendent, for the Boston Police Academy. He began his law enforcement career with the BPD in 1989 and since that time has served in multiple roles, including deputy superintendent of the BPD Bureau of Field Services and commander of the operations division. Cox earned a master of business administration from Questrom School of Business – Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts; a master of arts in criminal justice from Curry College, Milton, Massachusetts; and a bachelor of science in business management from Providence College, Providence, Rhode Island.
“Michael's broad experience and demonstrated abilities will be an asset to the Ann Arbor Police Department, which has a well-earned reputation for excellence," said City Administrator Howard Lazarus. “Michael has a keen understanding of the challenges facing law enforcement today, and he welcomes the opportunity to work with our community members to increase the department's community-oriented policing philosophy. He will serve the Ann Arbor community well."

The Police Chief position is responsible for the administrative supervision and leadership of the city's police services. The Police Department's mission is to provide protection and service to all. The City Charter requires City Council to appoint the Police Chief.
