Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notification
Archived News Release: May 1, 2019 - At approximately 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, staff at the City of Ann Arbor Waste Water Treatment Plant discovered an overflow of plant effluent water from the tertiary filter backwash wet well. The overflow, which received full treatment, except for final ultra-violet disinfection, flowed into the Huron River via a stormwater outfall. The City staff worked quickly to remedy the issue.
The total discharge of partially treated wastewater into the Huron River is estimated to be 75,000 gallons. In comparison, during this same timeframe, the flow in the Huron River was approximately 36,000,000 gallons.
In accordance with regulatory protocols, City of Ann Arbor staff has notified the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.
