Motor vehicle accident involving the AAFD

Archived News Release: August 1, 2018 - On Tuesday, July 31, 2018 at 23:05 hours (11:05PM), the Ann Arbor Fire Department (AAFD), Huron Valley Ambulance (HVA) Company, and the Michigan State Police (MSP) were dispatched to a reported motor vehicle accident on westbound I-94 at the Jackson Roadinterchange. While on-scene of a single vehicle accident, an AAFD aerial platform apparatus was assigned to a “park to protect” position to protect emergency response personnel operating in the immediate area. At the time of the initial call, heavy rain conditions were present in the area with limited visibility. Emergency response vehicles operating on this accident scene had all their emergency and scene lights activated.

While the AAFD aerial platform apparatus was protecting on-scene emergency personnel it was struck by two (2) passenger vehicles, and a large semi-truck/trailer. No emergency personnel or civilians were injured; however, the AAFD aerial platform sustained considerable damage.

Due to the accident investigation conducted by the MSP, westbound I94 at Jackson Avenue was closed to all thru traffic. The Ann Arbor Police Department assisted in the closing of I94, ramp closures, and the re-directing of traffic. The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Metro Dispatch Center distributed a community Nixel Notification advising to avoid the affected area due to an accident investigation. Triangle Towing Service was on-scene managing the removal of all disabled vehicles. At approximately, 02:08 hours (2:08AM), the highway system was reopened.

Any questions regarding the accident investigation should be directed to the Michigan State Police Brighton Post #12 at (810) 227-1051.
