Archived News Release: March 30, 2018 - City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP) will celebrate Earth Day by hosting stewardship workdays at two Ann Arbor natural areas: Maryfield Wildwood and Miller. Earth Day is a global event to celebrate the planet, held annually on April 22. NAP invites volunteers to celebrate Earth Day by taking part in two stewardship opportunities on Sunday, April 22:
- Maryfield Wildwood Park, 9 a.m.–noon — Maryfield Wildwood is a neighborhood park featuring a wooded ravine. In the spring, the redbud trees bloom with bright-pink blossoms. Celebrate Earth Day with NAP by pulling invasive species, allowing more native plants to grow. Meet at the intersection of Linwood and Wilton Streets.
- Miller Nature Area, 1–4 p.m. — Get outside and protect biodiversity on Earth Day! Despite this park's history of logging, farming and gravel mining, progress has been made to restore its natural beauty. Join NAP to continue the restoration process by pulling invasive dame's rocket and garlic mustard. Meet at the park entrance on Arborview Boulevard, just east of Wildwood Avenue.
First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day is a day of civic participation focused on protecting the planet. The Earth Day Network estimates over 1 billion people in 192 countries will take part in what is the largest civic-focused day of action in the world.
As with all NAP stewardship workdays, please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. All participants must complete a release form, and all minors should be accompanied by a guardian. Tools, snacks and know-how provided. Stewardship workday events are free. No RSVP is necessary for these Earth Day events, however if you have questions, or if you'd like to volunteer with your group of 10 or more, please contact NAP at 734.794.6627 or [email protected].
City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP) works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. This involves conducting plant and animal inventories, ecological monitoring and stewardship projects in Ann Arbor parks. Both staff and volunteers perform these tasks.
