Sanitary Sewer Overflow Notification

Archived News Release: June 22, 2017 - At approximately 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 22, the City of Ann Arbor was notified of a sanitary sewer overflow near the 2800 block of South State Street. Public Works crews quickly determined that a blockage in the pipe was the cause of the overflow and as of 9:30 p.m. have stopped the overflow. The overflow discharged an unknown amount of raw sewage into Malletts Creek, near the intersection of South State Street and Hidden Valley Club Dr. Malletts Creek outlets to South Pond, and ultimately the Huron River.

At this time, no immediate recreational facilities are impacted and river trips will not be interrupted. However, the City of Ann Arbor Parks Department has been alerted and will give paddlers special instructions to avoid the area. Additional local agencies have been contacted.

In accordance with regulatory protocols, City of Ann Arbor staff contacted the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to inform them of this unfortunate incident.
