Employment Verification

The City of Ann Arbor uses The Work Number® to provide employment and income verification services.

Step 1: Request Verification Through The Work Number

Most employment and income verification requests can be completed through The Work Number.

  • Employer Code: 16993
  • Visit The Work Number website for instructions on submitting a verification request.

Information Available Through The Work Number

The Work Number may provide the following employment and income verification information when authorized and permitted:

  • Employment status
  • Dates of employment
  • Job title
  • Income or salary information
  • Employer information

Some information may require authorization from the employee or former employee before it can be released.

Step 2: Contact Human Resources for Special Requests

Contact Human Resources only if:

  • You are requesting personnel records.
  • Your verification request cannot be completed through The Work Number.
  • Your request requires additional documentation.
  • You need information that is not available through The Work Number.

Required Authorization

No personnel records, employment information, or other employee-related information will be released without a signed Authorization for Release of Information by the employee or former employee.

The City of Ann Arbor accepts either:

  • A City of Ann Arbor Authorization for Release of Information form, or
  • A third-party authorization form signed by the employee or former employee that clearly authorizes the requested release.

Please attach the signed authorization form and any supporting documentation to your email request.

Information to Include in Your Request

Please provide:

  1. Employee Name
  2. Requesting Organization or Individual
  3. Contact Information
  4. Purpose of Request
  5. Description of Information Requested

Additional Information

The City of Ann Arbor does not complete third-party surveys, questionnaires, or reference forms.

Information will be released only as permitted by applicable law, collective bargaining agreements, and City policy.

Please allow 3–5 business days for processing after all required documentation has been received.

Public Records and FOIA Requests

Requests for public records, including requests made under the Michigan Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), are handled by the City Clerk's Office.

If you are requesting City records that are not related to employment verification, personnel records, or Human Resources special verification requests, please submit your request through the City Clerk's Office FOIA Requests page.
