Alarm Permits and Registration

If you are the owner of an alarm system, Chapter 93, Section 7:403 of the Ann Arbor Code of Ordinances requires you to register your alarm and obtain a permit annually.

Pistol Permits and Licenses

Pistol licenses and registrations can be completed with the AAPD. If you are buying a handgun from someone with a federal firearms license (FFL), including a retail store, a pistol permit and license are not necessary to obtain prior to your purchase. If you are obtaining a pistol from a private individual who does not have an FFL, you will be required to get a license to purchase prior to obtaining the pistol; however, you may obtain the license to purchase from any police agency in Michigan, not just the police agency for where you reside.

Professional Standards

Compliments and AAPD conduct complaints are directed to the professional standards division.


Found, lost or case-related property is handled by the property unit. To pick up or retrieve property, call 734.794.6952 to verify that your property is ready to be released and to make an appointment for pickup. 


The records division is responsible for recording and storing case files. This division maintains all incident and accident reports generated by the police department. Records staff assists the public by locating incident/accident reports, researching past incidents and redirecting to other agencies as needed.  


The training section is committed to coordinating training for new hires and current employees.
