District Detectives    Crime Strategy Unit    Crime Analysis Unit    LAWNET

The Ann Arbor Police Department detective section investigates criminal activity reported in the city of Ann Arbor.  Detectives’ responsibilities typically begin after the patrol section’s initial response and report.  The detectives handle any necessary follow up needed to ensure a complete investigation is presented to the Washtenaw County prosecutor for warrant authorization and later court proceedings.

Lieutenant Matthew Lige, mlige@a2gov.org, is the commander of the detective section.

District Detectives

The detective section has approximately 20 detectives. Most are assigned to one of two district detective groups.  These groups are assigned cases based on the geographical location of the incident.  District detectives conduct investigations on a variety of crimes ranging from larceny and fraud to home invasion, robbery and homicide.

Some detectives have additional training or expertise in crime scene processing, polygraph, computer forensics and domestic violence investigations.

Sergeant Craig Martin, cmartin@a2gov.org, and Sergeant Earle Fox, efox@a2gov.org, directly supervise the district detectives.

Criminal Intelligence Unit

Some detectives are assigned to the criminal intelligence unit (CIU) as well. The CIU is an investigative team designed with the flexibility to use traditional, as well as problem-oriented, policing approaches.  The unit can address a variety of public safety and crime-related quality-of-life concerns.  The daily duties of CIU detectives include crime analysis, anonymous tip follow up, fugitive apprehension and surveillance.  The CIU also provides support to district detectives on their cases.

Sergeant John Elkins, jelkins@a2gov.org, supervises the CIU.

Crime Analysis Unit

Crime analysis is the process of collecting and analyzing crime-related statistical information in order to help the police department formulate a strategy to address public safety issues. The analyst assists with research on cases and works closely with the patrol and detective sections to provide timely statistical reports.

Contact Sergeant Dawn Murphy,  dmurphy@a2gov.org for questions regarding crime analysis.
