Why is this project being done?

This project consists of performing capital preventative maintenance repairs on several City of Ann Arbor bridges.  Capital Preventative Maintenance repairs are work that is considered more than normal operations and maintenance work that could be performed by our Public Works forces.  The planned work includes repairs to the Fuller Road bridges over the Huron River; the Island Drive bridge over Traver Creek; the Broadway Bridges over Depot Street, the Wolverine Line, and the Huron River; and, repair the northerly railing attachment points of the Maiden Lane Bridge over the Huron River.  These bridges will keep these bridges in a state of good repair and extend their service live and extend the period of time until they will require more expensive and impactful repairs.

This work is being performed as called for in our recently updated Asset Management Plan for all the City's vehicular bridges carrying traffic on public roadways.

Work to Be Performed

The repairs to the Fuller Road bridge over the Huron River include chipping and patching deteriorated portions of the barrier wall; installing an epoxy overlay on the bridge decks; repairing the rip-rap along the west bank of the river; and, other minor items.  These bridges were originally constructed in 1993 and 1994.

Work to be performed on the Island Drive bridge over the Traver Creek primarily includes the placement of a concrete wearing course on the existing pre-stressed concrete box beams; replacement of the barrier railing; repairs to the cast-in-place concrete channel lining; and the installation of two storm sewer inlets to facilitate drainage due to the placement of the concrete wearing course.  The Island Drive Bridge was constructed in the early 1960's.

Work to be performed on the Broadway Bridges includes chipping and patching deteriorated portions of the barrier wall and sidewalks; adding an anti-slip coating to the expansion joint cover plates; repairing the loose and damaged anchor bolts on the railings; installing an epoxy-based healer/sealer on the bridge decks; and, other minor items. The Broadway Bridges were constructed in 2003 and 2004.

Finally, the northerly railing attachment points of the railings on the Maiden Lane bridge over the Huron River will be repaired by installing new railing anchor posts at the northerly end of the bridge.

Possible impact to business owners and residents:
  • Pedestrian traffic will be maintained at all times on the Broadway, Maiden Lane, and Fuller Road bridges;
  • Island Drive will be completely closed to vehicular traffic during the work on the bridge due to the narrow width of the roadway and the inability to perform this work in a “part-width" manner.  Detour routes will be posted for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic;
  • The work will require the use of lane closures on Broadway, Maiden Lane, and Fuller Road.  Unfortunately, this will unavoidably disrupt normal traffic along these streets while the work is occurring.  One lane of vehicle traffic will be maintained in each direction while the work is on-going;
  • Dust, noise, and inconvenience will be prevalent due to the nature of the planned construction.

Costs and funding source

The work will be funded through the Street, Bridge, and Sidewalk Millage and the Major Street Fund.
