Full Closure of Broadway Street from Traver Creek Crossing to Plymouth Road: Monday, April 17–Monday Aug. 21, 2023

During construction, traffic will be detoured on Plymouth Road. For local traffic within adjacent neighborhoods, access will be maintained.

  1. Vehicles traveling northbound on Broadway will be detoured north along Plymouth Road.

  2. Vehicles traveling southbound on Broadway will be detoured South along Plymouth Road.

Why is this project being done?

The existing water mains are too small and require upgrade to increase capacity and hydrant flow.  Also, the current condition of the pavement at some of these locations is poor and in need of replacement.

Work to be done

  • Feb.-March, 2023 tree trimming.

  • The existing water mains will be replaced with larger water mains to increase capacity.

  • The existing pavement will be replaced.

  • Some existing curb, sidewalk and ramps will be replaced for Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance.

  • Some storm water improvements.

  • Some safety improvement features are being considered.  These include installing new crosswalks with bump-outs at each intersection in the project limits along Broadway Street.

  • Sidewalk gaps in the existing sidewalk system along the northwest side of the street will be filled.

  • At the urging of the Ann Abor Fire Department, the existing speed humps will be converted to speed tables - twenty-two foot elevated table (3-3.5 inches) with a flat length in the middle that is ten feet long. It is legal to park on speed tables for those using legal on-street parking now.

Possible impact to residents

  • Broadway Street will be closed to through traffic for the duration of the construction.  Driveway access for local traffic will be maintained, but may include delay during working hours.  Cross street traffic will be maintained as much as possible.

  • Water service will be interrupted for short durations during water main relocation for a few residents. Disruptions will be limited, and residents will be informed in advance.

  • General noise and dust from equipment, particularly during site excavation.

Prime Contractor

  • Bailey's Excavating Inc.

Costs and funding source

City Street, Bridge, and Sidewalk Millage, Storm Utility Funds, and Drinking Water Funds will fund the majority of the work on this project.  New sidewalks will be funded by the Sidewalk Millage passed in November 2020
