Stephen K. Postema was appointed City Attorney in 2003.  He advises the Mayor, City Council, City Administrator and oversees the City Attorney’s Office. 

Mr. Postema currently serves on the Board, as Immediate Past-President, of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys and as Immediate Past-Chairman of the Michigan Municipal League's Legal Defense Fund.  Mr. Postema also serves as the Chairman of MAMA's legislative committee. He received the Outstanding Service Award from the MML at its 2012 Capital Conference for his work on MAMA's legislative committee.

Mr. Postema has served as an arbitrator, mediator, and facilitator in numerous employment, commercial, and negligence cases.  He has also lectured and written about a variety of legal issues. He is a frequent speaker on municipal law topics to municipal attorneys and officials and has taught a law school seminar on state and local government law.

Mr. Postema also serves as an election commissioner for the City of Ann Arbor.

Prior to his appointment as City Attorney, Postema was a partner at Bodman LLP, a Michigan law firm. At Bodman, he specialized in commercial and employment litigation and practiced regularly in the Federal Courts, the State Circuit Courts, and the Michigan Court of Appeals. He received the Distinguished Supreme Court Brief Award in 1998 for a Whistleblowers Act case he successfully argued before the Michigan Supreme Court.

Mr. Postema also served as a judicial clerk to then Chief Judge John Feikens, U.S. District Court, E.D. MI.  In law school, Mr. Postema was a judicial intern to a federal judge and a research assistant to the President of the University of Wisconsin.

 Mr. Postema attended University of Wisconsin Law School, Harvard University, and Ann Arbor schools.
