Permits, Licenses and Fees
The Permit Desk issues permits construction, zoning and soil erosion or grading projects. In addition, this desk also completes City of Ann Arbor registrations for contractors to work in the City and conducts a sewer installer exam to issue licensing for work performed in the City of Ann Arbor.
Construction permits are obtained by submitting the appropriate Commercial or Residential application form together with two sets of drawings of the proposed work, signed and sealed by an architect or engineer. Applications are reviewed for compliance with current Michigan building code and safety requirements. Trade permit such as, electrical, mechanical and plumbing that are not associated with large scale projects can be obtained over the counter same day. Trade permits can also be mailed or faxed into our office with a payment cover sheet in which case they are mailed back to the requester.
Plan review fees must be paid in advance of the review and remaining building fees are paid before the permit is issued, please keep in mind, work on your project cannot begin until a permit has been issued.
Construction permits are valid for 6 months from the issued date but remain active for the life of project with regular inspections performed. If the permit should expire before the project is completed, it can be reactivated and extended upon the submission of a written request to reactivate the permit, reactivation fee is $35.
Inspection Scheduling and Results
The Planning & Development Services Unit use a development review and inspection services software called TRAKiT that allows:
24/7 access to inspection results, look up permits online, check registration with the City, or schedule inspections using eTrakit
Inspections cannot be scheduled if there are outstanding fees on the permit or if the permit has not been issued. Scheduled inspections also cannot be canceled online for the protection of the permit holder.
Extra inspection performed on trade permits that are not paid at the time of issuance are invoiced after the permit has been finaled.
