2020 pool openings, day camps cancelled
Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation made the difficult decision to cancel city pool openings and summer day camps for the 2020 season.
Research from throughout the industry and talking with other park and camp professionals, attending webinars and reviewing recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and other organizations about opening during the pandemic along with many other factors were considered before making these decisions to keep pools and day camps closed. Ultimately, the need to maintain 6 feet of distance between participants and to keep shared surfaces sanitized after every use — for example pool ladders —becomes extremely difficult, if not unattainable.
“After carefully evaluating the available information, it became apparent that it is not feasible to open pools or operate day camps within the proposed guidelines while assuring the health and well-being of our visitors, staff and the broader community,” said City Parks and Recreation Manager Colin Smith.
All day camp and outdoor pool registrations will be fully refunded.

Ice Skating Lessons
The Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Services Instructional Skating Program is an official participant of the Learn to Skate USA Program sponsored by the US Figure Skating Association. This is a series of nationally administered badge tests used to measure skating skills. The tests provide a noncompetitive way of measuring skating skills and a feeling of self-achievement. All students in our kinderskate, beginner, intermediate and advanced classes will be tested on the badge skills and awarded badges when the skills have been successfully completed. Badge testing for adults is optional. All participants will have several chances to demonstrate each skill that must be mastered before moving to the next level.
Registration begins Aug 26.
*All participants must register with USFSA. A one-time fee of $14 is valid from September through August. The fee must be included with your registration, and can be paid for at the time of registration.

Figure skates are recommended for beginners, however a good pair of hockey skates is acceptable. Skates and helmets are available for use during class at no additional charge.
