Municipal Offices Closed for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; No Delays with Trash/Recycling Collection

Archived News Release: January 13, 2015 - Ann Arbor's municipal offices, including the customer service center at Larcom City Hall and the 15th Judicial District Court, will be closed in observation of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, Jan. 19, 2015. Ann Arbor's trash and recycling collection programs will provide services without interruption on the holiday Monday and throughout the week. Safety services and utility operations will maintain 24-hour schedules throughout.

On a related seasonal note, the City of Ann Arbor provides four free drop-off locations for undecorated Christmas trees through Saturday, Jan. 31, 2015, as posted on www.a2gov.org/compost

  1. The parking lot adjacent to the Drop-off Station at 2950 E. Ellsworth near Platt Road is available for 24/7 drop offs.
  2. Three park locations are available for Christmas tree drop offs during normal park visitation hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The collected trees will be chipped on a weekly basis at the park sites.
    1. West Park parking lot off Chapin near West Huron.
    2. Gallup Boat Launch parking lot, southeast side of Geddes Road, near Huron River Parkway.
    3. Olson Park parking lot, 1515 Dhu Varren Road, near Pontiac Trail.

All tree stands, nails, ornaments, tinsel and plastic bags must be removed from the trees and discarded. The collected evergreens are chipped into mulch or composted. Any metal, glass or plastic ornaments left on the tree can ruin the processing equipment, harm the operators, and spoil the landscaping mulch. Since wreaths and evergreen roping are generally made with wire or plastic backing, these items should be placed inside trash carts.

After Jan. 31,  all Christmas tree drop-off locations will be closed, and trees must be cut, bundled and delivered to the Drop-off Station, 2950 E. Ellsworth during normal operating hours, 8:30 a.m. to 6:30  p.m., Tuesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Ann Arbor residents may deliver their trees at no charge; others without a proof of residency will be assessed a small fee (www.recycleannarbor.org). The trees may also be cut and tied into a bundle or placed inside an optional compost cart to store until the weekly curbside compostable collection resumes the first week of April.
