Archived News Release: May 26, 2016 - Across the country, individuals eagerly await fun summer adventures; and American Hiking Society's National Trails Day® will kick off the season of good times outside on Saturday, June 4, 2016. The largest annual trails celebration promises to deliver a wide variety of outdoor adventures to suit the nation's craving to be immersed in the great outdoors.
Now in its 24th consecutive year, National Trails Day provides fun opportunities for the public to have a summer adventure of their own on nearby trails while taking part in activities such as hikes, trail runs, bicycle tours, stewardship projects, activities for kids, and much more. Many National Trails Day events are family oriented and offer entry-level introductions to anyone who might like to try a new trail activity.
You are invited to join us for local events celebrating National Trails Day hosted by the City of Ann Arbor Natural Area Preservation (NAP). NAP works to protect and restore Ann Arbor's natural areas and to foster an environmental ethic among its citizens. Volunteer opportunities on National Trails Day are listed below. For more information about NAP, visit www.a2gov.org/NAP. Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes to workday events. Workday events are suitable for all ages, but minors must be accompanied by a guardian or contact NAP in advance to obtain a release form. Tools, snacks, and know-how provided. Free.

Bird Hills Nature Area
9 a.m.–noon
The 3 miles of trails in Bird Hills give some lovely views of the Huron River. This is the largest Nature Area in Ann Arbor, and provides a great space to get out and see wildlife and wildflowers. Volunteers are needed to help maintain the trails throughout the park. Join us at the Bird Road entrance on the north side of this park, west of Huron River Drive. There is limited parking at the entrance, but more nearby at the Barton Nature Area entrance on Huron River Drive.
Saturday, June 4
Ruthven Nature Area
1–4 p.m.
There's a new trail at this park! We've made great progress restoring native wildflowers here, and now they are easier to get to. Help continue this effort by removing invasive plants and working to maintain the trails. Please meet at the Gallup boat launch parking lot, on the southeast corner of Huron Parkway and Geddes Road.
