City Administrator Announces Police Chief Recommendation

Archived News Release: November 12, 2015 - On Monday, November 16, City Council will consider a recommendation by Ann Arbor’s City Administrator Steve Powers to appoint James White to Police Chief. If confirmed by City Council, White is expected to begin leading the AAPD in mid January.

Since February 2013, White has served as an assistant police chief with the Detroit Police Department. He began his law enforcement career with the DPD in June 1996 and since that time has served in multiple roles, including Deputy Chief, Commander, Lieutenant, Sergeant and Police Officer. White holds a bachelor's degree in sociology from Wayne State University. He is currently completing a master of science degree in counseling from Central Michigan University.

“I’m confident that James’ broad management experience and abilities will be an asset to the Ann Arbor Police Department, which has a well-earned reputation for excellence,” said City Administrator Steve Powers. “James has a keen understanding of law enforcement challenges and opportunities and I’m confident he will serve the Ann Arbor community well.”

The Police Chief position is responsible for the administrative supervision and leadership of police services and emergency management. City Charter requires City Council to appoint the Police Chief.
