Aug. 16 Concert in the Park to Feature Songs of Duke Ellington

Archived News Release: August 3, 2015 - The sounds of jazz legend Duke Ellington will come to life on stage in Cedric Liqueur's one-man show at Burns Park Sunday, Aug. 16 at 1:30 p.m. The event titled "Rocks in My Bed: Duke Ellington and His Music" is appropriate for all ages and chronicles the life of Ellington, an orchestral jazz musician and band leader of the early to mid-20th century. Liqueur will creatively draw the audience in to the historical life and times of the jazz great — from his beginnings to his first interest in jazz. The audience can expect to hear Ellington favorites such as "Satin Doll," "Mood Indigo" and "Reminiscing in Tempo." Liqueur also asks for requests from the audience and encourages singing and dancing along. A former member of the Shakespeare Company, he developed the "Rocks in My Bed" show in part as a child-centered, music appreciation activity for visually impaired, hearing impaired, special needs and unimpaired elementary and middle school children.

This special performance will close out the season of the Concerts in the Park Summer Series, a City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation program enjoyed by all ages and developed by the Ann Arbor Senior Center. Concerts in the Park is an initiative of the City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Cultural Arts Program, which also includes community sings, acoustic jam sessions, films, seasonal indoor concerts and art receptions throughout the year, typically held in the Ann Arbor Senior Center (1320 Baldwin Ave.) or at the adjacent Burns Park.

The Cultural Arts Program is made possible by a generous grant from the Kiwanis Club of Ann Arbor, community donations and support from the Ann Arbor Senior Center.

"Rocks in My Bed: Duke Ellington and His Music" will be staged inside the Ann Arbor Senior Center. To learn more about the Cultural Arts Program, visit www.a2gov.org/CulturalArts.
