Archived News Release: April 17, 2015 - The community is invited to attend an artist reception featuring Ann Arbor artist Brenda Miller Slomovits with live classical guitar performance by Michael Harrington and light refreshments. The event is free and takes place 6–8 p.m. Friday, May 1, 2015, at the Ann Arbor Senior Center, located in the southeast corner of Burns Park, 1320 Baldwin Ave.
The show's theme, "Seeing Latitude" centers on preservation and ecology, topics that capture Miller Slomovits' attention and inspire her art. Miller Slomovits hopes her work will inspire a similar affect in her audience. In reference to her upcoming exhibit, she states her, "deepest wish is that this exhibit would be a springboard for impressions and memories of our love of the land, moving us to help protect and sustain our natural surroundings." One quarter of art sales proceeds from "Seeing Latitude" will be donated to Legacy Land Conservancy. The exhibit includes a number of the Ann Arbor Observer covers she has done over the past 18 years, but mainly focuses on her new abstract collages which are meditations and reflections on ecology, climate change and sustainability
Artist statement: I've been inspired by years spent living in the Rocky Mountains and in my Ann Arbor home, surrounded by woods. I'm grateful that the gorgeous natural areas of our state and country have shaped my love of beauty and interest in creating art, which in turn has led me to support efforts to protect the environment. I continue to seek a personal way to have an impact, despite sometimes feeling frustrated and ineffectual.
Brenda Miller Slomovits has been studying and working in the field of art and design for much of her adult life. She received her BFA from Eastern Michigan University in 1989 and has shown her work in the Chelsea River Gallery, Legacy Land Conservancy Exhibits, Ann Arbor Women Artist's exhibits and the U of M Art Exhibits. The Ann Arbor Observer has published her art on over a dozen of its covers. Since 1998, she has also worked in support of parents and families in the Mott Newborn Intensive Care Unit and the Ann Arbor Ronald McDonald House.
The gallery is open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
